Official Color Line timetable

Midday ferry or late sailing

Only Color Line operates the Hirtshals - Larvik route, and the timetable above shows sailings in both directions. The real choice is the time of day: from Hirtshals the midday ferry departs around a quarter to one and reaches Larvik in the late afternoon, while the late sailing departs late in the evening and arrives around three in the morning. From Larvik the ferries leave around eight in the morning and in the late afternoon.

For most travellers the midday ferry is the more convenient choice: you drive through Jutland in the morning, are in Norway by the afternoon, and have the evening free to continue your journey. The late sailing is worth it if you only reach Hirtshals late in the day, or if you have somewhere to stay near Larvik that you can still get to at night; there's no cabin on the SuperSpeed 2.

What to watch for in the timetable

The route runs year-round, but the frequency varies. Most days have two sailings each way. In autumn and winter, only one runs on some days, often at a different time than usual, for instance early evening instead of midday. In April there's usually only one ferry each way, from Hirtshals at midday and from Larvik in the late afternoon, while in summer the late sailings shift slightly. On a few winter weekends Color Line adds the sister ship SuperSpeed 1, giving sailings in the morning and early evening as well. So check your specific date above rather than assuming the pattern from another month.

For the return crossing, switch direction in the timetable; each direction has its own list of sailings.

With a vehicle, deck space is the bottleneck rather than the sailing: on holiday weekends and in summer, motorhome and trailer spaces sell out earlier than passenger seats. What the crossing costs is explained on the Prices & fares page.
