The terminal for Larvik

Hirtshals is Denmark's gateway to Norway: ferries sail from here to Larvik, Kristiansand, Stavanger and Bergen. For the Larvik route, only one terminal matters, Color Line's Fergeterminalen at Norgeskajen 2, in the northern part of the port near the town centre. The Color Line ferry to Kristiansand departs from the same terminal building, so watch for Larvik as the destination at the check-in barrier. Fjord Line uses its own terminal in the west harbour, which plays no part in this route.

Getting there by car

Coming from the south, the A7 runs via Flensburg to the border, then the Danish E45 on to Aalborg, where you switch to the E39, which runs the roughly 70 km to Hirtshals and ends almost at the harbour entrance. It's around 500 km from Hamburg. From the harbour entrance, the terminal is signposted with the Color Line logo. The check-in barriers sit right in front of the lanes; what you need there is on the Check-in page.

Motorhomes and trailers use the same approach road. Color Line requires all guests to be at the terminal at least 60 minutes before departure; for the late sailing that means arriving in Hirtshals late in the evening.

Parking

There's paid parking at the Color Line terminal. It's especially useful for foot passengers who leave their car in Denmark and travel to Larvik without a vehicle. How travel on foot works is on the On foot & by bike page.

By train and bus

Hirtshals station is the end of the regional line from Hjørring, which connects to the Aalborg-Frederikshavn line. It's about a ten-minute walk from the station to the Fergeterminalen; buses also stop within this distance. So Hirtshals is easy to reach without a car.

Before departure

If you're at the port early, Hirtshals itself is right on your doorstep: the lighthouse on the dune west of the harbour, the North Sea Oceanarium and the Second World War bunkers of the coastal defences. The town centre is a few minutes from the terminal. For arrival in Norway, see the Larvik ferry port page, and for the road ahead the Getting there & onward travel page.
