Color Line on the Hirtshals - Larvik route
Table of Contents
Color Line is the only ferry company on the Hirtshals - Larvik route. It runs the fast ferry SuperSpeed 2 year-round, a pure day ferry with no cabins, whose home port is Larvik. The ferry link between Larvik and Denmark has existed since 1937; today more than 700,000 passengers travel with Color Line through the port of Larvik each year.
SuperSpeed 2 at a glance
The SuperSpeed 2 was built in 2007 at Aker Yards in Rauma, Finland, and is 211.3 metres long. It's designed for 1,929 passengers and 764 cars and sails at 27 knots; the crossing takes a scheduled 3h45. The concept is a day ferry with no cabins: all passengers spend the crossing in the seating and dining areas on the upper decks, with the vehicles on the car decks below. All public areas on board are accessible.
On some days between mid-December and mid-March, the sister ship SuperSpeed 1 sails the route, sometimes in addition to the SuperSpeed 2 and at different times. It's also a day ferry with no cabins, and a little faster. Which ship sails on your date is shown in the booking form.
Sailings
Color Line sails twice each way on most days. From Hirtshals the midday ferry departs around a quarter to one and the late sailing late in the evening; it reaches Larvik around three in the morning. From Larvik the ferries leave around eight in the morning and in the late afternoon. In autumn and winter only one ferry runs on some days, in April usually only one each way, and in summer the late sailings shift slightly. Sailings for your date are in the timetable.
On board
Food is served on Deck 8: the Catch Me If You Can buffet restaurant has hot and cold dishes, desserts and a children's buffet, with seats reserved at your table. The Fly Me To The Moon bistro offers baked goods, hot dishes, salads and cakes, and is open from departure to arrival, no reservation needed. You can pay in euros, Danish kroner and Norwegian kroner.
Free seating is available in Centrum Seating and the Family Lounge, with a play area and TV for children. Because there are no cabins, Color Line sells two seating classes as an add-on: Business Class on Deck 8 has its own area with a locker, coffee, fruit, mineral water and newspapers, while Voyager Class on Deck 9 has adjustable reclining seats with a child price. Wi-Fi is available across the whole ship, free in Business Class. Luggage lockers cost a small fee in kroner. The surcharges are on the Prices & fares page.
Vehicle, motorhome and motorcycle
Color Line prices vehicles in packages: a car package covers cars up to 5 metres long and 1.95 metres high and is charged per person including the vehicle, a motorhome package covers two people with a vehicle up to 5 metres long and 2.55 metres high. Anything longer or taller is booked to measure; this includes a roof box, aerial, roof hatch, tow bar and bike rack. Before boarding you close the main gas supply, loose petrol canisters are banned, and no one may stay on the car deck during the crossing. There's no shore power. What this means for a motorhome or caravan is on the Motorhome & caravan page.
Dog on board
With Color Line, dogs either stay in their own vehicle or travel in a booked dog box in the dog area. The boxes on the SuperSpeed 2 come in various sizes; the largest measure 100 by 75 centimetres and one metre high. Bowls are provided, and you arrange visiting times at reception. Both options cost a fixed surcharge per crossing. Assistance dogs travel free and are registered by phone. What documents Norway requires is on the Dog & pets page.
Check-in and terminals
Check-in in Hirtshals opens two hours before departure and closes 15 minutes before; Color Line requires all guests to be at the terminal at least 60 minutes before departure. Every traveller needs a national ID card or passport. Travelling without an accompanying adult is allowed from age 16, and 20 for a same-day return.
In Hirtshals, Color Line uses the Fergeterminalen at Norgeskajen 2, about a ten-minute walk from the station, with paid parking. In Larvik the terminal is at Revet 8 at the town's harbour, with limited outdoor parking and access via the E18. Both terminals are described on the Hirtshals ferry port and Larvik ferry port pages, the process on the Check-in page.
