Travelling to Larvik by motorhome
Table of Contents
For motorhome travellers, the Hirtshals - Larvik ferry is the direct way into the Oslofjord area: no detour via Sweden, and from Larvik you're straight onto the E18. Color Line carries motorhomes, caravans and trailers on the SuperSpeed 2. If you know how the packages work and what the rules on board are, you'll book the right ticket and arrive at the terminal without surprises.
How Color Line prices vehicles
Color Line sells vehicles in packages. The motorhome package covers two people with a vehicle up to 5 m long and 2.55 m high; the car package covers cars up to 5 m long and 1.95 m high. Anything longer or taller, so many motorhomes from van-conversion size upwards and all car-and-caravan combinations, is booked to measure.
What counts is the vehicle's actual total length and height. Color Line explicitly requires you to include a roof box, aerial, roof hatch, tow bar and bike rack. Measure the loaded vehicle, not the figure in the registration document, and round up. Package prices are on the Prices & fares page.
Gas, fuel and power
Before boarding you close your vehicle's main gas supply, and it stays closed for the whole crossing. That means the fridge, heating and gas hob are off. Loose petrol canisters aren't allowed on board. If in doubt about how much gas you can bring, check with Color Line before booking.
There's no shore power on the car deck, and you can't plug in a cool box during the crossing either. On a crossing of just under four hours, pre-chilled food keeps easily.
Which sailing suits you
With a motorhome, your arrival time in Norway is the real question. The midday ferry from Hirtshals reaches Larvik in the late afternoon, leaving you daylight to drive on to your first pitch. The late sailing arrives around three in the morning and only suits you if you already have a pitch in or near Larvik that you can reach at night. In the other direction, the morning ferry from Larvik gets you to Hirtshals around midday. Times for your date are in the timetable.
Give the full dimensions at booking; if you book to measure, the booking form shows the price for exactly that vehicle.
At the terminal
Motorhomes use the same check-in lanes as cars. In Hirtshals you drive the E39 to the harbour entrance and follow the Color Line logo to Norgeskajen 2; in Larvik the Revet terminal is signposted from the E18. Color Line requires you to be at the terminal at least an hour before departure. Details are on the Hirtshals ferry port, Larvik ferry port and Check-in pages.
On board and afterwards
No one may stay on the car deck during the crossing; all passengers go to the SuperSpeed 2's passenger areas with restaurant, bistro and free seating. Dogs may stay in the vehicle; what applies is on the Dog & pets page. Where to go on from Larvik is described on the Getting there & onward travel page.
